Pte J.Schute served in the 1st Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment and saw service in Natal and took part in the battle at Belfast. He was discharged and sent back to England on the 11th September 1901 and therefore also earned the SA 1901 clasp which was issued off the supplementary roll.
Shute did not take part in the Defence or Relief of Ladysmith as did many of the Devonshire Regiment but he did see action on the 27th August 1900 at Bergendal (Belfast). This was to be the last set piece battle of the war. During the greater part of 1901 the 1st Devons operated in columns under Major General W. Kitchener and other commanders and were on operations to the south and north of the Delagoa Railway. Here they did excellent work. The 1st Battalion was to get to know the Belfast-Dulstroom and Lydenburg districts very well as they remained active in these areas until the spring of 1902. Shute however, was discharged in September 1901 and returned home.
A good medal with a nice state, battle and date clasp
